{"id":1275,"date":"2025-06-11T11:57:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-11T09:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stichtingtimkilliam.nl\/?page_id=1275"},"modified":"2025-06-20T12:53:53","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T10:53:53","slug":"tim-killiam-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/stichtingtimkilliam.nl\/en\/tim-killiam-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"Tim Killiam Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Launch of\u00a0Tim Killiam\u00a0Grant<\/p>\n<p>Encouraging young\u00a0social\u00a0scientists to conduct\u00a0research\u00a0in\u00a0architectu<wbr \/>ral and urban history<\/p>\n<p>The Tim Killiam Foundation\u00a0has partnered with the\u00a0University of Amsterdam (UvA)\u00a0to\u00a0launch\u00a0the biennial Tim Killiam\u00a0Grant, which will be announced during\u00a0today\u2019s\u00a0celebration of the first\u00a0lustrum\u00a0of the\u00a0Master\u2019s\u00a0Degree\u00a0in\u00a0Urban and Architectural History.<\/p>\n<p>Within\u00a0this\u00a0partnership, the foundation\u00a0offers\u00a0a\u00a0grant of \u20ac10,000 every two years for\u00a0research\u00a0on\u00a0architectural and urban history related to the Amsterdam city centre or the city of Amsterdam in a broader sense.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0grant is intended for (former) students or PhD candidates of the interdisciplinary\u00a0Master\u2019s\u00a0cou<wbr \/>rse\u00a0in Urban and Architectural History and the Amsterdam Centre for Urban History (ACUH),\u00a0which are\u00a0both part of the Humanities\u00a0Faculty\u00a0at the\u00a0UvA. With this\u00a0grant, the foundation and the\u00a0UvA\u00a0aim to stimulate young\u00a0social\u00a0scientists in their research and to bring their\u00a0results to the attention of a\u00a0broader public: enthusiasts and interested parties,\u00a0as well as\u00a0professionals. The grant\u00a0would\u00a0be\u00a0used by the winner to make the results\u00a0of their\u00a0research\u00a0accessible to a\u00a0wider audience. This could include\u00a0financing the\u00a0publication\u00a0of\u00a0a book, one or more articles, a website, an exhibition, an event,\u00a0or a podcast.<\/p>\n<p>Projects\u00a0are\u00a0put forward\u00a0by self-nomination\u00a0and on the recommendation of the\u00a0UvA\u00a0staff.\u00a0One\u00a0condition is that the research in question\u00a0must have\u00a0been completed and that the grant\u00a0is used to\u00a0help raise awareness of the subject.\u00a0All short-list candidates must submit\u00a0their own\u00a0plans\u00a0before the\u00a0jury.<\/p>\n<p>The selection of the grant winner\u00a0is done\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0joint\u00a0discussionbetw<wbr \/>een the foundation, the\u00a0UvA,\u00a0and an independent expert.\u00a0The first Tim Killiam\u00a0Grant\u00a0will be awarded in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong>\u00a0Tim Killiam Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0manages the legacy of architect, draftsman and photographer Tim Killiam (1947-2014).\u00a0Among\u00a0his\u00a0many\u00a0wo<wbr \/>rks,\u00a0Killiam was\u00a0the\u00a0publisher of the\u00a0Amsterdam Canal Guide\u00a0(1978). One of the\u00a0Foundation\u2019s objectives is to support\u00a0\u2018scientific research into the urban development of Amsterdam\u2019s\u00a0city centre through the\u00a0ages\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The interdisciplinary\u00a0<strong>Master\u2019s\u00a0deg<wbr \/>ree\u00a0course\u00a0in\u00a0Urban and Architectural History<\/strong>\u00a0at the\u00a0UvA\u00a0is a collaboration between urban historians (working in the History programme) and architectural historians (working in the Art History programme). Students\u00a0examine\u00a0the city as a focal point of political, cultural and socio-economic developments, and\u00a0how these developments\u00a0shape\u00a0architectur<wbr \/>al\u00a0and urban\u00a0construction.\u00a0The\u00a0course<wbr \/>\u00a0has no geographical or time-bound\u00a0limits and covers both buildings and people\u00a0\u2013\u00a0from cities in classical antiquity to the modern metropolises of today. The\u00a0Master\u2019s\u00a0degree course\u00a0is strongly connected to Amsterdam,through excursions, case studies and collaborations with external parties, thesis research and internships.<\/p>\n<p>PhD candidates in the field of urban and architectural history are affiliated with the\u00a0Amsterdam Centre for Urban History(ACUH, part of the Amsterdam School of Historical Studies), which organises meetings and\u00a0holds\u00a0monthly seminars\u00a0in which\u00a0guest speakers from the Netherlands and abroad present their research.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tim Killiam\u00a0Grant\u00a0versus\u00a0Tim Killiam Prize<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the Tim Killiam Foundation launched the\u00a0<strong>Tim Killiam Priz<\/strong>e, an award for artists who have made an original or valuable contribution to the image of the city of Amsterdam. The first three prize winners \u2013 Arie Schippers (2023), Chad Bilyeu (2024) and Janneke Viegers (2025) \u2013 each received \u20ac15,000, plus an exhibition in the Grachtenmuseum and a bus stop campaign throughout Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p>As of\u00a02025, the Tim Killiam Prize will be a biennial art\u00a0prize.
